A warm, sunny day greeted those who attended the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre at Edwinstowe after a run from St George's Car Park, Doncaster to celebrate & support the FBHVC's 'Drive It Day'. A total of 14 cars attended and were parked together in an area just off the main public car park.
Those who wished could visit the nearby craft centre or the various shops, cafes, etc at the main visitor centre or simply take a (lengthy) walk around the woods viewing the many old & gnarled specimens in the forest including the famed Major Oak. This tree is said to be about 800 years old, weighing in at 23 tons and having a girth of about 33 feet. The myth suggests Robin Hood used this tree as a hideout, but it would have been a mere sapling in the 12th or 13th century.
